Although I have a microwave, I don’t use it very often because I prefer other alternatives, such as steaming. However, sometimes a microwave comes in handy, especially when I’m re-heating leftovers or when I’m in a hurry. Since I use it quite rarely, I don’t have to clean it too often, but when I do, I prefer my personal method.

When it comes to cleaning products for microwaves, many people visit their local store and buy a cleaner in the chemical aisle, but I think this is not the wisest solution. These cleaners can be expensive, hard to use, toxic and quite ineffective in certain situations. Today I’ll share my cleaning method (that I recommended to everyone I know) and a few other ways of cleaning a microwave in less than 10 minutes.

1. Water & Vinegar Microwave Cleaner

My research shows that my personal cleaning method is not so personal, but this is good for you, because I’ve found a video tutorial that describes the main steps of my method. As you can see below, you can clean your microwave in 5 simple steps that will take less than 10 minutes.

You’ll need:

– 3/4 glass of water;
– 1/4 glass of vinegar;
– 1 toothpick;
– 1 microwave-safe bowl;
– 1 dish sponge;
– 1 cloth.

1. Pour the water into a microwave bowl and add the vinegar. Tip: To avoid bubbles when boiling, it’s recommended to drop a toothpick inside the bowl.
2. Insert the bowl into the microwave and choose the ‘5 minutes program’.
3. Leave the door closed for 2 more minutes after the buzzer goes off. This way the steam will soften all the dried grease and will remove the unpleasant odors.
4. Open oven’s door and remove the bowl with water. Note that we’re talking about very hot water, so you should be really careful.
5. Now wipe the microwave interior with a damp sponge and you’re done.

2. Water & Lemon Microwave Cleaner

Lemon is an easy natural cleaner that will leave your dirty microwave looking spotless fast

This quick and easy way to clean a microwave involves water, vinegar and steam. It’s quite similar to the the previous one, except the fact that this one uses lemon, not vinegar. Still, it’s easy to do, it takes less than 10 minutes, and it works great.

3. Microwave Cleaning With Paper Towel

Rub down your microwave with a paper towel to make sure it is spotless before a deep clean

Paper towels prove extremely useful in a kitchen, but this use is completely new (to me at least). It seems that you can clean your microwave oven in less than 10 minutes using a wet a paper towel that releases steam after 1 minute of microwaving. Then all you have to do is to wipe the softened grease with it and you’re ready for dinner.

4. Microwave Cleaning With Dish Soap

Dish soap is an affordable and convenient way to clean up your microwave

Cleaning a microwave oven with dish soap doesn’t seem such an original idea, but it is, if you use the technique presented in this tutorial.

Quite similar to previous solutions, this one suggests mixing some dish soap with water and put the solution into the microwave for about 1 minute (until it produces steam).

5. Microwave Cleaning With Baking Soda

Use baking soda for an easy and cheap solution to a dirty microwave

Some of us are using baking soda for almost anything, from tooth brushing to silver restoration. This time it’s recommended for microwave cleaning, because this magical powder is also a natural deodorizer. Follow the tutorial step by step and your microwave oven will sparkle in less than 10 minutes.

6. Microwave Complete Cleaning

So far we have talked only about how to clean the inside of a microwave, but what about the exterior? These tutorials show you how to perform a complete cleaning of a microwave (inside and out) without damaging it. Make sure you pay attention to each detail and your food will taste better in the end.
